Ruth Yates, 10, is one of several talented young writers at the Maharishi School whose work was submitted by their teacher Cliff Yates.

It was obvious from the quality of the work received from this school, that poetry is enjoyed enormously by the teacher and students. It made delightful and cheering reading. This poem shows a confidence with rhyme and form, a joyful imaginative step into the slippery world of a piece of seaweed, a pleasing ear for the music of the poem and a sense of humour Ruth Yates receives Stopping for Death: Poems of Death and Loss, edited by Carol Ann Duffy (Viking). THE LIFE OF A PIECE OF SEAWEED

I’d like to be some seaweed

and floppily lie on the sands

while the sea laps my head and legs

and dozily licks my hands.

I’d like to be some seaweed

and dream a seaweed dream

I’d have a salt bath every day

and stay immaculately clean.

I’d like to be some seaweed

I’d never have to work

I’d lazily, dozily, floppily, poppily

on the wet sand lurk
