TES Young Poet of the Week

This is the last TES Young Poet column for this term, but please continue to send in your pupils’ work.

Next term’s guest poet will be Moniza Alvi (pictured). Born in Pakistan and brought up in Hertfordshire, she has been a teacher in south London for more than 15 years. She was co-editor of Poetry London Newsletter and joint winner of the Poetry Business pamphlet competition in 1991. A group of poems from the pamphlet, “Presents from Pakistan”, was included in her first collection, The Country at my Shoulder (Oxford University Press), a book which led to her inclusion in the “New Generation” group of poets.

Moniza’s latest collection, A Bowl of Warm Air (also OUP) which was inspired by her first trip to the subcontinent after many years, was published in 1996.

Please send poems, not more than 20 lines in length, to TES Young Poet of the Week, Admiral House, 66-68 East Smithfield, London E1 9XY.

Chosen poets will receive a book nominated by Moniza, and their teachers will receive a set of Poetry Society posters. Please give your name and the poet’s name, age and school. All poems must be the writer’s unaided work.
