Councillors are well known for the close interest they take in the intricacies of matters educational. Ahem . . .

Well, anyway. In Inverness last week, Highland’s education committee heard a lengthy and detailed exposition from education officer Donnie MacDonald on the weighty issues surrounding 5-14 testing and standardised tests.

After MacDonald had finished, committee chairman Andy Anderson sought democratic legitimacy: “Do we have agreement?”

“Aye, we submit,” came a cry from the benches.

On then to more comfortable territory - a 45-minute discussion with full councillor participation on plans for a Highland festival.
