Kensington and Chelsea council has been celebrating since it emerged triumphantly with great results in the new-style inspections of children’s services.

Rightly receiving some of the credit has been Shireen Ritchie, the council’s children and family services member. Mrs Ritchie is, of course, the mother-in-law of Madonna. She is married to John Ritchie, father of the Material Girl’s film-director husband Guy.

So has Madonna been a Lucky Star for Kensington and Chelsea? Could the singer be a Ray of Light for its schools, someone to Cherish and help them get more pupils over the CD grade Borderline?

Unlikely, perhaps, but if her book The English Roses appears in the borough’s school libraries, we will know who to blame.
