THE greats of British history and literature are being forgotten in favour of light-weight modern novels and pop star heroes, according to the chair of the Society of Headmasters and Headmistresses of Independent Schools.

Edward Mitchell, head of Abbey Gate college, Chester, told the society’s annual conference that young people knew everything about David Beckham and Madonna, but little about William Gladstone or the Bront sisters.
