Nigel Williamson’s comments (TES, January 15) are put into even sharper perspective when one considers the well-spring of ‘50s American rock-and - roll.

Can you imagine the great conjurors of rock-and-roll’s elemental forces such as Elvis, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis or James Brown emerging from a state-sponsored wefare environment?

Early rock-and-roll was about moving forward fast not sitting at home whining.Eddie Cochran caught the zeitgeist in his song Somethin’ Else. The lyrics should be pasted up in all “rock schools” which should all then be summarily shut down.
