All 150 music teachers who took their grade one music exam on an unfamiliar instrument in Cambridgeshire’s fundraising Grade One-a-thon (Friday magazine, January 30, 2004) passed at a special all-day examining session on February 29 (about 10 dropped out due to domestic, work or health pressures). In doing so they raised more than pound;40,000 in sponsorship for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices.

The best performers were the new clarinettists, who each averaged a distinction (scoring more than 130 out of a possible 150 marks).

Percussionist Evelyn Glennie and oboist Nicholas Daniel also gained distinctions (she on double bass, he on guitar). Donations can still be sent via www.justgiving.comcharityeach.
