Following the serious delays to the marking of tens of thousands of national tests, it must have been a relief for Dr Boston to be able to share some good news with MPs.

Unfortunately, it appears that he was somewhat premature in his claim that all tests taken by 11-year-olds were now marked.

The next day, The TES and the BBC were told of numerous cases of papers still left in cardboard boxes awaiting the attention of markers.

As one key stage 2 science marker, who contacted The TES, said: “Presumably, Dr Boston isn’t aware that there is still a set of unmarked papers sitting in my hall, as they have been since May when they were mistakenly sent to me, waiting for ETS to get their act together and collect them. Somehow, I doubt I’m the only marker in this situation.”
