They’ll never find another ewe

EDUCATION authority officers, we know, are overworked and underpaid. But sometimes they tackle problems that must make their lives worthwhile, as Highland Council staff discovered recently.

According to an unusually impeccable source (ie unconnected with the Scottish Qualifications Authority), a Skye crofter has billed the council for pound;60 after one of his sheep, clearly unamiliar with the off-side rule, was strangled in a football net strung between playground goalposts.

The demand included the value of the ewe and the cost of taking it to the knacker’s yard. The authority is said to be solemnly “considering the matter”, although it presumably has a little bit more room for fiscal manoeuvre after freezing its payments to the SQA.
