The provision of transport is one of the essential ingredients in Glasgow’s recipe for educational success. All pupils affected by a secondary closure, including those in associated primaries, will be eligible even if they do not transfer to their designated comprehensive.
The council also intends to use transport to allow pupils to switch school at the key transfer stages of primary 7, secondary 2 and secondary 4 if parents believe “a more appropriate provision” exists elsewhere. Any move, however, must be sanctioned before transport is provided.
The report to councillors this week accepts that many parents will not want children to travel long distances. The intention is that no pupil would live more than three miles from a secondary school but children may have to travel farther for specialist provision. Placing requests will be amended to give a high priority to pupils from a closed school who choose not to go to the secondary designated by the council.
