DAILY discourtesy is now a fact of life in secondary schools. Teachers say low-level bad behaviour from rude, unco-operative pupils is taking its toll on them. Even schools with good reputations are now turning to pound;400-a-day private behaviour management consultants for help.
Daniel Carpenter (right) has taught English, philosophy and media studies in north London for the past four years and has found that well-planned lessons are the best defence against disruption. He says that training and support to tackle low-level bad behaviour are inadequate as resources are focused on extreme behaviour such as violence against staff, which is relatively rare.
