Tim Brighouse, chief education officer of Birmingham City Council, has been appointed visiting professor at London University’s Institute of Education, which celebrates its centenary this year. Professor Brighouse, - soon to retire from Birmingham- has transformed its once poor-performing education service to one with a reputation for dynamism.

Professor Geoff Whitty, director of the Institute, said: “Tim is an inspirational leader who cares passionately about making a success of inner-city schools. I am delighted that he will be joining us in our centenary year.”

Professor Brighouse said: “Thanks to the Institute, we know a lot more about making education successful for youngsters.” He will work closely with the London Leadership Centre, and plans to evaluate the implementation of collegiate academies, which he pioneered in Birmingham.
