Time limit was wide of the mark

THE article “400 seconds to mark four months’ work” (TES, May 16) was misleading and based on a single examiner’s superficial misunderstanding of general guidelines.

Edexcel does not “expect” examiners to work to detailed schedules. We set no time limits on the marking of individual scripts or allocations beyond that required for the successful completion of the marking process, which is three weeks.

Our priority is to maintain quality and consistent standards, which are achieved through a series of checks on the examiner’s marking performance.

Edexcel’s 16,000 examiners undergo strict training and their work is monitored at every stage to ensure their marking meets the required standard. This procedure is closely regulated by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
