In connection with “Languages in crisis” (TESS, January 23), the Scottish Association for Language Teaching, with approximately 700 members working in all sectors of education, has been attempting for two years (so far unsuccessfully) to establish a dialogue with ministers of education regarding the need for a national strategy for foreign language teaching and learning.

We welcome the prominence given to language teaching issues elsewhere in the edition. But what is required is creative thinking from all concerned. Telling us we are “crap” is not the way forward.

Chair, Scottish Association for Language Teaching
