Now: QCA consults on David Blunkett’s proposal to end the requirement for primary schools to follow programmes of study outside English, maths, science and information technology from August;

Easter: QCA guidance for primaries on providing a broad-and-balanced curriculum to summer 2000. Work starts on revised national curriculum; Summer term: Publication of new statutory Orders in non-core primary subjects; new national curriculum documents sent to schools; From August: Primary schools must maintain “balanced and broadly based curriculum” but no obligation to follow programmes of study in six non-core subjects. Inspectors to stop reporting the extent to which teaching complies with curriculum in non-core subjects. QCA consults on effectiveness of its guidance on breadth and balance in primary curriculum.

September 1999: Development and consultation on revised curriculum for all schools completed by QCA

September 2000: Revised curriculum introduced.
