Tongue-in-cheek statistics

Andy West's comment on my professional competence is based on a perverse misreading of my remarks about teaching quality (Letters, 21 October). My original point, made tongue in cheek, was that improving the weakest teachers will not raise the population average if, at the same time, the best teachers are dragged down (Cover story, 16 September). Now, I don't think that breaks any of the rules of statistics ...
