“I’ve seen it all now,” said the west of Scotland primary teacher after dealing with an upset five-year-old whose lunch box was awash and whose sandwiches and crisps were destroyed. The teacher’s assumption that a drinks carton had burst proved mistaken when she uncovered a wooden stick plus wrapper.

The child’s mother had included an iced lolly.
