“It feels like a wedding where no one has got drunk yet,” said schools minister Jim Knight about the marquees which hosted many of this year’s fringe events.

But the atmosphere was far from the worst problem: the lack of sound-proofing meant Carol Adams, General Teaching Council chief executive, and Mary Bousted, general secretary of the Association of Teachers Lecturers, had a tough time trying to compete with a very loud and verbose Lord Kinnock.
