Tories backtrack on spending

THE Tories this week retreated from their pre-election pledge to match Labour education spending. In a pre-emptive strike ahead of next week’s Treasury spending review (see pages 12 and 13), in which education is likely to be the main winner, the Conservative party said there was no direct link between spending and results achieved by pupils.
