A Conservative government would let more schools run so-called “rigorous” tests. Shadow education secretary Michael Gove said he would allow more state school pupils to take international GCSEs and pre-Us - currently only popular in private schools. He said this would create a “level playing field”. He also wants to set up an online library of past exam papers, scripts and examiners’ reports so parents and the public can track changes in standards over time. The Tories say the website would “restore public confidence in the exam system”. Anyone would be able to add to the library, which could have documents dating back to the Victorian times. It would be free of charge to the public.
