IF physical education is not put right in curriculum time, school sport will continue to struggle, Brian Monteith, the Scottish Tories’ education spokesman, said this week in response to the Sportscotland seminar and last week’s evidence to the education, culture and sport committee.
Mr Monteith called for an inquiry into how independent schools manage to have three times as much physical education time as state schoolswithout damaging their curriculum. “Jack McConnell’s warm words about sport in schools will not change a thing,” he said. “Of course, we want teachers to become more involved in extracurricular sport, but until we get things right during curricular time our children will not be able to realise their full potential.”
Mr Monteith added: “This requires a real commitment to more time for PE and more PE teachers.”
