The Conservatives announced plans this week for an annual National Music Week to help improve “grassroots” music in education. It will include a nationwide week-long festival, culminating in a televised national competition to find the best school orchestra. The shadow culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt, said: “We have to win the argument that investing in music education is not an alternative to literacy and numeracy but a complementary strategy that can make a huge difference to the success of a school.”
