PARENTS WHO choose to keep their children in nursery for an extra year because they are too young to attend primary school should have their pound;1,000 fees paid by the Government, the Conservatives pledged this week, Jennifer Currie writes.

Brian Monteith, the Tories’ education spokesman, said 1,600 children aged four and a half were completing a further year in nursery because parents are unwilling to send them to school early.

“Our voucher will enable parents to send their children to the nursery school of their choice,” Mr Monteith said.
