Tougher educational attainment targets should be set for looked-after children, according to a Conservative AM. David Melding said children in care should be given the same GCSE targets - five A*-C grades - as the rest of the school population, instead of the current target of three A-G grades. Last year, only 9 per cent of children in care in Wales achieved the higher target, compared with 60 per cent of mainstream pupils. Huw Lewis, deputy minister for children, said new guidance would soon be issued to schools to help improve the education of looked-after children.
