HEADTEACHERS must promote self-discipline among pupils to ensure their authority is not undermined, the National Union of Teachers says in a new booklet providing advice on avoiding unacceptable pupil behaviour.
Recommendations for appropriate sanctions include “cooling-off” periods and the removal of pupils from the classroom. Guidelines also indicate when it is acceptable to use force to restrain pupils, for example in order to prevent criminal damage or to avoid disruption in lessons.
