The drillies of South Lanarkshire are hopping mad. After years of trying to raise the status of physical education by developing courses for Standard grade and Higher, they were upset to see a council advertisement for a “principal teacher of fitness and health” at Blantyre High.

“It’s a bit like calling an English teacher a teacher of reading and writing,” grumbled one miffed wulkie-tumbler.

Not to worry, as it turns out. The Blantyre weans will still be offered the delights of certificated PE, but the successful applicant will also have responsibility for “the management and development of health education and health awareness”, topics previously regarded as within senior teacher remits.

When promoted posts can be rehashed like this, who needs a millennium review?
