Traffic accident awareness

The most common cause of death of 12 to 16-year-olds is road traffic. To raise awareness of this almost unnoticed but horrifying slaughter, the Department for Transport has launched a campaign featuring free lesson plans and posters. Students are invited to practice their French as they read about deux enfants run over by un camion, to compare screen car chases with the real thing, to reflect on the bravado associated with drink-driving and to plan a media campaign. The posters are hard-hitting images of dead teenagers who put chatting on a mobile or listening to a personal stereo before their own safety. Lesson plans are available at www.schools.dtlr.gov. uk and posters can be downloaded at www. think.dtlr.gov. ukteenagersindex.htm
