Anyone who has negotiated Hardknott Pass doesn’t need reminding that the Lake District isn’t a natural environment for cars; yet 90 per cent of visitors to the area arrive on four wheels. Traffic Management is one of the latest additions to an excellent series of 16 local fact sheets. Covering issues such as noise, congestion and alternative transport, it provides a good example of how complex environmental issues can be communicated to a wide audience. Habitats offers a similar exposition of how woodland, water, rock, moor and cultivated ground combine to make an elaborate pattern of use and beauty. These and other leaflets in the series can be ordered for 50p each from National Park Authority Information Centres and the National Park Authority Education Service (tel: 015394 40800) or downloaded free on the NPA website: www.lake-district.gov.uk Tom Deveson and Geraldine Brennan
