Tragic target

I read with horror and disgust, but no surprise, the dreadful story of Mr and Mrs Gillan. Their 15-year-old daughter Megan died but they then received a standard, computer-generated letter regarding her attendance. This is what the education system has become - children and young people are no more than data and statistics.

I’m sure the headteacher felt absolutely terrible, but it is symptomatic that nobody was responsible for preventing such a hurtful action. People must have known of Megan’s death but, of course, were too busy concentrating on attendance targets, levels of attainment and action plans.

This target culture has got to go.
