Only the GTC has the “financial and physical resources” to become the national agency for co-ordinating and accrediting training for teachers in post, it says in its response to the Scottish Office consultation on continuing professional development.

The council underlined its determination to carve a niche in post-probationary training, despite strong opposition from directors of education who remain sceptical of any deeper GTC role.

The council accepts it would have to collaborate with local authorities to ensure a national system of in-service training reached high standards.

But Anne Wilson, director of education in Dundee, warned of the potential for friction. The GTC had to state clearly what it wanted, she said.
