I HAVE just read about the tragic field trip where two children lost their lives (TES, October 20).
As a trainee primary teacher specialising in PE I recently took part in an outdoor education trip in the Lakes with a group of Year 5 children.
This was a valuable trip for both me and the children. The children experienced things such as living away from home; new activities and living as a small “family” etc. It also gave me the chance o explore how a teacher would organise and arrange such a visit.
One of our main concerns throughout the weekend was safety and there was constant risk assessment for each activity.
When I become a qualified teacher I will be confident in my ability to organise such a trip. This has only come from the residency, why don’t all teacher-training courses do this?
