The UK has made little progress in reskilling its workforce, according to a new study from the London School of Economics. The government target of 60 per cent of young people reaching A-level standard by 2000 now looks unattainable, say Andy Green and Hilary Steedman, authors of the new study on training; only 40 per cent of 18-year-olds reach such a level today compared with 75 per cent in Germany. One suggested explanation is the lack of career reward for those with “intermediate” qualification compared with graduates.
