From this month, all pupils achieving at least level 6 at key stage 3 will be entitled to study the course, and specialist science schools will have to offer it to all pupils who achieve that level.

This autumn, schools will be able to send teachers on the Triple Science Support Programme, which will help them understand the differences between the double and triple GCSEs, build the confidence of young teachers and help teachers to pool resources and knowledge.

The workshops will be supplemented by a website, which will offer advice on managing triple science, and an online community for staff to exchange information.

The Government hopes the move will increase the number of pupils studying science at A-level.
