Councils are being urged by David Blunkett to lobby the Government to introduce US-style school buses. The former education secretary, now chairman of the Yellow School Bus Commission, said councils should start working with schools to look into how the scheme could work. He said that where buses already have been introduced, parents were pleased and children felt safer.

The commission is asking various government departments to make a financial contribution.
