CYPRUS: A party of teachers and 11-year-old schoolchildren from northern Cyprus have been prevented from attending an international peace festival by the Turkish-Cypriot authorities.

The Olympia Children's Peace Festival, run by the Institute of World Affairs, was due to involve more than 200 children from 12 areas of high tension, including Cyprus, in sports, cultural and conflict-resolution activities.

But in two separate incidents two teachers and 17 schoolchildren from Olan Cocuklarin school in Famagusta, who had been preparing for the event for a year, were refused permission to board their flights on orders from their government. Witnesses said 50 policemen were mustered to keep them out of the airport.
