More than half of truants caught in Liverpool city centre in a single day were accompanied by adults. A crackdown led by Liverpool council found that many children skipping school were with adults who claimed they were off because of illness.

“We suspect that many had simply taken a day off school to go shopping,”

said Ron Collinson, head of school attendance.
