If you get stuck for something to do this summer, the National Trust is running all kinds of family fun at its UK properties, so there’s bound to be something within distance to quiet those cries of “I’m bored”.

Two to six-year-olds can join the Very Hungry Caterpillar (or at least his glove-puppet alter ego) at Calke Abbey in Derbyshire on August 19 as he nibbles the gardens. On July 27 at Erddig, Wrexham, Mr Jellybeans will demonstrate juggling and circus skills, while visitors to Felbrigg Hall in Norfolk can take part in a Victorian Living History Day (July 22 and 29, and August, 5, 12, 19 and 27), trying butter-making, laundry and other duties of a Victorian servant. For those keen to go further back in time, Bodiam Castle is encouraging Monday, Wednesday and Friday visitors (between July 25 and September 3) to try on armour and play 14th-century instruments and games.

Booking is necessary for many activities and prices vary. For more details: 0870 458 4000; www.nationaltrust.org.uk.
