Join the citizens of Leicester at De Montfort Hall on June 8 for an afternoon of performances, workshops, a theatrical make-up extravaganza and the launch of a giant rocket built by artist Phil Allison with children from Moat community college. Pavement painting

All over the UK, chalk-wielding artists are getting ready for this year’s Young Pavement Artist competition. More than 1,700 young people are expected to take part in 200 events in which they will be invited to get down to earth and compose on the theme of the coastline. Each pitch costs pound;1, with proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. The main London event is at Colonnade Walk, Buckingham Palace Road, on June 7 from noon, when there will be music, magic, puppet-making and cartoon drawing. Magical Mozart

Prince Tamino and the bird-man, Papageno, will join families on a quest through their enchanted forest during the Magic Flute family festival at the Barbican in London on July 12 and 13. Storytellers, artists, singers and musicians will help create a version of Mozart’s best-loved opera, leading to a shared performance by families and professional singers. Tickets: 0845 120 7500.
