AS ANTHEA Millett prepares to clear her desk at the Teacher Training Agency, there is no sign of any clamour from potential chief executives to take on the job.

Frankie Sulke, the current head of teacher training, is likely to apply, but the salary of pound;80,000 plus a possible 10 per cent performance-related bonus may not be enough to persuade others. The tough job specification - creative qualities, leadership experience, understanding of the problems of teacher recruitment -- rules out most. Possible candidates might include Professor David Reynolds, part-time adviser to ministers on teacher training.
