Also on the election, the week saw a flurry of withdrawals by Government spokesmen from conference speaking engagements until May, in accordance with normal practice.

Among the enforced absentees was Ron Tuck from Tuesday’s meeting on assessment of the Headteachers’ Association of Scotland (page three). But why should the chief executive of the Scottish Qualifications Authority have to withdraw when Cameron Harrison, his opposite number at the Scottish Consultative Council on the Curriculum, was free to tuck in as a last-minute alternative speaker?

Okay, the Higher Still programme could be an election issue, but what about the teaching of Scottish history, on which the council has been so eloquent recently?
