Congratulations on your campaign to promote the importance of music in primary schools (TES, April 24). I can only speak personally as a parent who has observed a daughter develop intellectually, socially and in self esteem, as well as musically through learning to play the cornet and piano.
Although she has lessons at school and has opportunities to play to school audiences, instrumental tuition is marginalised. Not only do we pay for the lessons but they must be arranged during the morning break or lunch time. I understand that this ruling, which values neither music nor digestion, follows criticisms during an inspection.
I suggest that OFSTED’s attitude to music should be examined as part of your campaign because in my daughter’s case the effect of inspection appears to have been to devalue what I regard as one of the most important aspects of her education.
