Irrespective of who wins the election, the campaign has been a golden opportunity for schools to enthuse their pupils with a love of democracy, intellectual engagement and the political process. The TV debates have helped revive the art of rhetoric and I even caught a group of students arguing about the benefits of proportional representation.

I’ve been surprised by the number of sixth formers who have registered to vote and treated apathy with the contempt it deserves. I was also delighted by the way in which local candidates readily agreed to share a platform at our school.
