Channel 4 is axing Teachers, its popular drama, after five years. A spokeswoman would not give a reason for the decision to stop the programme, which ended its fourth series last month with a Christmas special that attracted 1.7 million viewers.

Teachers’ unions criticised early episodes of the show because of scenes in which a staff member shared a joint with a student and stole a bust of Shakespeare.
