Tyrrell’s triumph

Your obituary of Tyrrell Burgess (May 15) made no mention of his role as a member of the old Inner London Education Authority in the early 1970s. In particular, Tyrrell presided over the arrangements for admitting pupils to the authority’s 200-plus secondaries. This he did with great efficiency and flair. As a result of a policy of ability banding and “bussing”, the authority achieved levels of parental and student satisfaction that can only be dreamt about today, and a lot of this was down to Tyrrell.

Professor Roger Brown, Southampton.
