UK plc yearns for appliance of science

I was heartily encouraged by the comments of your leading science experts (“How science can pass the teaching acid test”, October 8) who so clearly articulated the need to enthuse and excite children about the world of science, and the need to start this process early if we are to support them.

UK plc has a dire shortage of engineers and technologists. There is almost an entire generational gap in our supply chain of qualified young people who have progressed science education to degree level and are ready to enter work.

Business has a key part to play in enthusing children and bringing the worlds of engineering and science to life, whether through visits to schools, site visits, work experience or teaching resources.
