A mathematics teacher fired from a private girls’ school after pupils spread gossip that he was seeing a sixth-former has been awarded more than Pounds 45,000 in compensation.

An employment tribunal ruled in February that Andrew Bolton, 36, had been unfairly dismissed from Church high school, Newcastle, in December 2002.

A caretaker and pupils had claimed he was having an affair with Shona Upton, then 17, but the couple said their relationship began in August 2002 when Ms Upton was 18 and had left the school.
