Although I perused the league tables for schools with interest, I was struck by one particular anomaly.
If secondary modern schools such as Tolworth Girls’, which is non-selective and has had the top 15 per cent of its intake creamed off by local “grammars”, is outper-forming neighbouring selective private schools, why is the Government wasting taxpayers’ money to take children out of such successful schools under the Assisted Places Scheme?
Would not the money be better spent supporting such centres of excellence?
