THE Riddell report recommended a school week in special schools and units similar to that in mainstream schools. Education authorities and professional bodies generally agreed, and some said they had taken steps to create uniformity, while others were discussing it.

A small number of respondents did not think the length of the school ay or week was a problem. All, however, agreed on flexibility and for the needs of individual children to be taken into account, along with travel time and costs, medical implications and issues of staff time.

The Executive has said that it will consult with the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities and other interests.
