MAY I defend the suggestion which Pat Sweeney says (TESS, March 10) caps all other extraterrestrial opinion? I suggested a single uniform compulsory for all pupils in all schools distinguished only by badges. I would never have thought of the idea had I not seen it work so well in other countries.

My real point in making the suggestion was to point the difference between our attitudes to uniform and the curiculum.

If we find it extraterrestrial to imagine uniformity of apparel which is attainable regardless of social background and personal attributes, why do we not find it equally extraordinary to impose uniformity of curriculum, teaching methodology and pace of instruction which takes no account of the individual and different qualities of our children?
