IRELAND: The president of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions has launched a fierce broadside at the secondary teachers’ union which banned all voluntary supervision and substitution work in schools from March 4.
Senator Joe O’Toole claimed that a “small clique” had effectively achieved a controlling position in the leadership of the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland and its pay campaign was a disaster.
His comments have provoked fierce controversy, especially as Senator O’Toole is also general secretary of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation, the largest teacher union in the country.
